ABILITIES

Maintained her ability to distinguish supernatural beings. Her immortality rip has been toned down; she can no longer connect her String (which means she can't share others' immortality), but she still steal their immortality if close to them.

PERSONALITY

Cold, distant and aloof are probably the three best words to describe Cat. But that is the superficial part of her, her demeanour, what she lets people see - and that is saying a lot. The girl is a very reserved - yet not shy - girl. Privacy is something that she prizes, over many things. To intrude in her personal space is to ask for a big shove out of it from her. Secretive and with an iron-made willpower, Cat is very mature and strong for her young age, perhaps for having been forced to grow up so fast.

Stubborn, determined and arrogant are perhaps another layer that she occasional lets out. Her blunt honesty, straightforwardness and tactless self make her a person hard to connect. Her unwillingness to explain herself at all gives off the impression that she's a irresponsible girl, but everything she does, she has a motive to. She dislikes to be forced into doing things as well as control, perhaps the reason she has so many problems with authority - if you don't count the murdering and etcetera, that is. With an almost dead sense of humour, Cat is independent to a fault, she is calm and collected, but if someone touches a sore spot, she can become quite temperamental and impulsive. However, under these layers, Cat is still a bit of a child. While she seems to be able to push away anyone that cares for her with ease, on the inside, she is struggling to not to ask them to stay. She has learnt that she cannot stay close to anyone she cares about, for something always happens to them. She's very prone to wander off in her mind, thinking about a million things at the same time, but able to have organized thoughts in that apparent mess.

Her arrogance, however, comes from her determination. When she puts her mind to something, she will do it, no matter how. Proud, but silent, Cat knows when she should stop trying or give up - but that does not mean she actually does it. However, this realistic side of her lets her think about other solutions - she is quick to think and her ability to get out of trouble after trouble is an astounding feat.

BACKGROUND

An accidental birth - so has she been told - Catherine was born in a cold November night, in the city of London, to a mother who was both a drug addict and a street prostitute that actually suffered from nymphomania. Ever since her birth, the girl was watched over her mother's... "colleagues", but soon it was Helen, a prostitute that already knew her mother, that tended to come around and make sure the little baby wasn't hurt.

As she grew, Catherine struggled to keep a relatively normal life, making sure nobody knew her mother and especially what she did for life. She used to lie, saying that her mother was a single woman and a flight attendant so she had to spend a lot of time over her godmother's house. The lie did stick, it wasn't that strange of a thing to happen in modern days, and she went through school pretending - wanting - to be just like any other normal girl. She especially loved her gymnastic classes; Tracy, the teacher, was a lovely young woman who took quite a liking of the small, lithe girl. Not long after, the two develop a sort of relationship. Almost like a mother-daughter kind of relationship, something the girl had never experience before. Because Tracy was unable to have children of her own, "adopting" Cat was an almost unconscious act of hers. Later on, she would discover about the girl's real life, but Catherine made her swear she would not say anything - if the Social Services would find out, .

Fast forward, skip a few plot spoiling parts, and we have an eleven-years-old Catherine cleaning up the kitchen's bathroom that her mother had vomited upon after ingesting too many pills. That night, someone rang at the door - it should be Helen, Catherine had called for her help, but she was wrong. Some pimp of sorts, it seemed, appeared to drag her mother to work. For years, Catherine always closed her eyes to these situations and nod her head obediently and let them take her mother, but that night, she would not admit that. Her behaviour, however, almost made her pay with her life. And, in a way, it did. In the middle of the struggle, Catherine shot the man square in the heart and almost killed her mother when the woman surprised her. Scared, the girl accidentally shot her mother. The accident changed her life; after calling for an ambulance for her mother, Catherine disappeared.

Cat was born that night. Henceforth, the girl became different. Stoic, distant and cold, she began to look for Tracy, who had disappeared without a trace. She began to become streetwise, to get a kind of underground fame, rising as 'Shadow Cat', a name she would grow to hate and despise. All of her ties were cut loose, never talking to anyone else again from her past, erasing all evidence of her mere existence, deleting and burning all files on her. The only contact she still maintained, for the sole reason that she occasionally needed a ceiling and a bed to sleep on, was with Helen, who Cat forced to keep her mouth shut about her existence, to everyone, and especially to her mother.

On her thirteenth anniversary, it was revealed to Cat that there was more to this world than humanity. A kind of parallel world, as if Hell and Heaven really did exist, demons and creatures of the Dark of all kinds. Her first contact would be with a vampire lord as she followed more clues to find about Tracy. Unbeknownst to her, she was able to find his String - what made his soul immortal - and entwine it with hers, thus making the vampire as mortal as she was, by dividing his immortality. Later on, she discovered more about that ability of hers by a creepy demon who went by the name of Mr. Macabre. From him, she learnt how terrifying it was for others alike him to have a human with this power. And so, she learnt to manipulate this, still knowing - not caring to know - nothing about this ability. All she did, was to control it so that it would pose no threat to her to cut their immortality. Unfortunately for her, she didn't understand that every time she entwined her String with demons or just creatures with darkness within their souls, some of that Dark infected her like a virus. It would be both a good thing and a bad thing. While she became slightly stronger, faster and more resistant than normal humans, she also became more distant and cold, almost more of a demon than a human.

Over the years, Cat kept following clues scattered all over London to get to Tracy, but every time she got close to something, Tracy would be gone in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, she also became acquaintances with a police officer named Lawrence Blackmore - who later became a private detective - who kept her informed on more secret cases, for he would find out that there was a world with demons and about Cat's power. Some homicides, he began to notice, were not possibly committed by humans, and Cat was always a helping hand. However, she was also a criminal, thus the reason why he had become a private detective, so that Cat wasn't discovered by the authorities.

The years went by. After almost eight years of searching for Tracy to no avail, even the determined Cat began to falter. Restless nights, insomnia or nightmares filled dreams deprived her from sleep. Tired and sick, the girl sat on top of a roof and wished so very bad for some rest, just some hours of sleep. She wished that she could just have one restful night without nightmares. And when a voice told her that it could offer her that, in exchange of a promise and her soul, Cat couldn't help but to snort and nod. Who knew, perhaps Tracy would be there anyway.
